License Policy and Agreements
Kentico Xperience 13 License FAQ
Subscription License model
The Subscription License Model offers clients a nonexclusive, royalty-free, non-transferable, right and license to access and use the Software for a defined period of time based on a yearly pre-paid license fee paid by the client annually to retain access and use of the Software.
1 Website License
1 Website License allows you to use Kentico Xperience Enterprise/Business for one live website. The website may have one main domain and any number of additional domain aliases that point to the same content as the main domain.
Different language versions of the same website that are created using the built-in multi-lingual support are all considered as the same website.
If you run websites with different content on sub-domains of the main domain, such as store.mydomain.com, these websites are considered as a new website and require an additional license.
If you run a mobile version of your site within the same Kentico Xperience Enterprise/Business website (within the same content tree) as your main site, 1 Website License covers both the main site and the mobile site.
If you run multiple sites with different design and/or purpose in a single Kentico Xperience Enterprise/Business website, each of these sites still needs 1 Website License.
License options for Kentico Xperience Enterprise/Business are available in Auto-scaling License(s).
Below you can find few basic examples how the licensing for website licenses is considered:
Scenario #1 - VALID for 1 Website License
Client is running www.xyzcompany.com, and they have a sub-section of the site www.xyzcompany.com/abc (with or without an alias or sub-domain, ex: www.abc.xyzcompany.com). The sub-section is a publicly accessible area of the primary domain, where the same Masterpage, Main Navigation and Templates are used.
Scenario #2 - VALID for 1 Website License
Client is running www.xyzcompany.com, and they have a sub-section of the site www.xyzcompany.com/abc (with or without an alias or sub-domain, ex: www.abc.xyzcompany.com). The sub-section is a publicly accessible area of the primary domain, where the same Masterpage and Main Navigation are used; but different Templates are used.
Scenario #3 - VALID for 1 Website License
Client is running www.xyzcompany.com, and they have a squeeze page (i.e. landing page) for a campaign of the site www.xyzcompany.com/campaignABC (with or without an alias or sub-domain, ex: www.campaignABC.xyzcompany.com or www.campaignABC.com). The sub-section is a publicly accessible area of the primary domain, where the design is unique for such landing page, including unique Masterpage, Main Navigation, Template, etc.
Scenario #4 - INVALID for 1 Website License
Client is running www.xyzcompany.com, and they have a sub-section of the site www.xyzcompany.com/abc (with or without an alias or sub-domain, ex:www.abc.xyzcompany.com). The sub-section is a publicly accessible area of the primary domain, where the same Masterpage is used; but a different Main Navigation and Templates are used.
Scenario #5 - INVALID for 1 Website License
Client is running www.xyzcompany.com, and they have a sub-section of the site www.xyzcompany.com/abc (with or without an alias or sub-domain, ex: www.abc.xyzcompany.com). The sub-section is a publicly accessible area of the primary domain, where a different Masterpage, Main Navigation and Templates are used.
5 Website License
The Kentico Xperience Enterprise/Business 5 Website License allows you to use five main domains for a single organization and/or for entities controlled by this organization by at least 50%. The server doesn't have to be your property - it can be a shared, virtual, or rented dedicated server.
Source code
There are two levels of source code:
- Source code of the web project and of the administration interface - this source code is provided with all license editions.
- Full source code of all libraries and controls - this source code is provided only as a part of the Source Code licensing option
The full source code is not necessary for common use of the product - you can create flexible dynamic websites without modifying the full source code. It's intended for users who need to make advanced modifications to the core CMS libraries.
Maintenance
A maintenance agreement is included with all paid and active Kentico Xperience Enterprise/Business subscriptions.
Upgrades
Major upgrades (12.0, 13.0, etc.) are provided free of charge only to the customers who own a license with an active maintenance agreement.
24/7 Global support
Free technical support is provided:
- to users who evaluate Kentico Xperience Enterprise/Business during their evaluation period
- to users who have an active Kentico Xperience Enterprise/Business maintenance agreement
Technical support is provided by email and phone. All questions are usually answered within one business day.
MVC development
The Kentico development model for ASP.NET MVC applications relies on the Web Farms functionality. Without an appropriate license key, certain Kentico services (for example Smart Search) cannot work properly because the data is not synchronized. All licenses with auto-scalability automatically support all MVC configurations so there are no further licensing considerations required.
No user licenses
There are no per-user fees.
Development, staging, and QA license at no extra cost
There's no per-developer fee. You are entitled to install Kentico Xperience Enterprise/Business on any number of development, staging, and QA computers that are not used for displaying content to the website audience.
License transfers
You can transfer the license to a third-party e.g., to your client. You can only transfer the whole license, not part of it. If you want to transfer a license, please contact our sales team.
License limitations
Every project has a specific set of requirements (number of SKUs, recipients, etc.). Our licensing model, however, is flexible enough to support projects of any size. See the licensing options, and choose the best one for your project:
Edition/Feature | Business | Enterprise |
---|---|---|
Email feeds | 10 newsletters | Unlimited |
Newsletter recipients | 5000 | Unlimited |
SKUs | Unlimited* | Unlimited |
Data protection (GDPR) support | No | Yes |
Web Farm support | Yes |
Maintenance
A maintenance agreement is included with all paid and active Kentico Xperience Enterprise/Business subscriptions.
The maintenance covers:
- free technical support during the maintenance period
- free major upgrades (12.0, 13.0, etc.) released during the maintenance period
See maintenance renewal prices.
Maintenance renewal process and late renewals
Under the Subscription License Model, customers receive a notification of expiration one month ahead, five days ahead, and on the day of expiration. Customers must pay for the subscription before the expiration date, otherwise the front-end of the website will be no longer available.
Upgrades
Upgrades to a new version
Major upgrades (12.0, 13.0, etc.) are provided free of charge only to customers who own a license with an active maintenance agreement.
Minor upgrades (12.5, 13.5, etc.) are provided free of charge to all customers who are authorized to use the related major version (12.0, 13.0).
Upgrades to a higher license or edition
If you need to upgrade a single license to a higher edition license (e.g., to Kentico Xperience Enterprise) it's possible to purchase the upgrade at any time and we will provide you with credit based on your initial purchase.
A client that has purchased a subscription will receive a 50% credit of unused value remaining from their subscription period. In all cases, upgrades to a higher edition or license need to be purchased for a minimum of 12 months.
Below, you can find an example of a customer who purchases a Kentico Xperience Business - 1 Website Auto-Scalable Subscription (Yearly) for $9,999 and later decides to upgrade to a Kentico Xperience Business - 1 Website Auto-Scalable Subscription (Yearly) for $17,999. Depending on the time when they decide to upgrade, the upgrade fee will be calculated as follows:
Date | Unused value | Credit | Upgrade Price |
---|---|---|---|
1st month from purchase | 100% x $9,999 = $9,999 | $9,999 x 50% = $4,999 | $17,999 - $4,999 = $13,000 |
3 months after purchase | 75% x $9,999 = $8,333 | $8,333x 50% = $4,166 | $17,999 - $4,166 = $13,833 |
6 months after purchase | 50% x $9,999 = $5,833 | $5,833 x 50% = $2,916 | $17,999 - $2,916 = $15,083 |
While customers are able to upgrade at a later stage, the best way to achieve the highest ROI is always to purchase the appropriate license outright and avoid any overpayments.
